If you know me, you know that I'm a bird lover. I'm a member of the Travis Audubon Society and love to go to the Texas coast during migratory seasons. But I saw this stork on a not-so-glamorous adventure of flipping through a coffee table book on birds around the world. These live in the Eastern Hemisphere and are huge! They remind me of the whooping cranes I got to see last November in Port Aransas.
To get the pools of blue dabbling through the plumage, I used some special watercolor paint masking fluid (fancy term for glue). It's very satisfying to pull up and reveal the protected areas after the layers have dried.
Note the golden background on the original: I chose to have the bird extend past the margin to show how giant these creatures are. The background is removed on the print reproductions for a different look. This original painting is the only version I will sell with the golden background! I like the idea of being able to distinguish the original in this way.
